Overview

Jimei University (JMU), one of the key universities located in Xiamen City, Fujian Province, is a multi-disciplined university. It is jointly constructed by the Ministry of Transport，the Ministry of Natural Resources，the Fujian Provincial Government and the Xiamen Municipal Government. The university started with the Teacher's Department of Jimei School founded in 1918 by the famous patriotic overseas Chinese leader, Chen Jiageng (Tan Kah-Kee), and the Fisheries Department、Business Department of Jimei School founded in 1920. It has a history of over 100 years. Its motto “Sincerity and Perseverance” is a precious spiritual heritage handed down by Tan Kah Kee, It has formed the characteristics and advantages of marine-oriented disciplines such as navigation and fishery, which has undergone a long and glorious history and enjoys great fame far and wide.

Ⅰ.Academic Programs

Bachelor’s Degree Program Duration: 4 Years

Master’s Degree Program Duration: 3 Years

Doctoral Degree Program Duration: 4 Years

II. Application requirements

1.Applicants shall abide by the laws and decrees of the Chinese government, be in good physical and mental health, and possess a valid foreign passport;

a. In accordance with Article 5 of the Nationality Law of the People’s Republic of China, a person whose parents are both Chinese citizens and have both settled abroad, or one of whose parents is a Chinese citizen and has settled abroad, shall not have Chinese citizenship if he or she has acquired foreign citizenship at birth. If such a person applies to study in a bachelor’s degree program at JMU as an international student, in addition to meeting the University’s all other application requirements, he or she is required to have held a valid foreign passport for at least 4 years and have actually resided in a foreign country for at least 2 years in the past 4 years (as of April 30, 2025) (9 months of residence in a foreign country counts as a full year. The dates of the entry and exit stamps in the passport will be followed in the determination of the actual length of foreign residence. This requirement is also applicable to residents of the Chinese Mainland, Taiwan Hong Kong or Macao who have emigrated to a foreign country and obtained foreign citizenship and are applying to study in a bachelor's degree program at JMU as international students..

b. Foreign citizens of Chinese origin can register as international students and apply for Residence Permit in China, but only after being officially recognized by the Exit and Entry Administration Bureau. Please refer to the Instructions on Citizenship Certification.

2. Applicant qualifications and age requirements

a. Bachelor’s degree: 18 to 30 years old (as of September 1，2025), with senior high school diploma or equivalent education;

b. Master's degree: no more than 45 years old (as of September 1，2025), with a bachelor's degree;

c. Doctor’s degree: no more than 50 years old (as of September 1，2025), with a master's degree;

d. Preparatory course students, continuing education students for one year program: no more than 50 years of age.

3. language proficiency requirements for degree programs

a. Both Undergraduates、Postgraduates and Doctoral students of our university mainly adopt Chinese teaching. Applicants for programs taught in Chinese should achieve International Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) band 4 or above,which is valid for two years. Applicants who have finished their highest diploma completely in Chinese are exempted from proof of Chinese Language Proficiency Test, but they must present a medium-of-instruction certificate.

b. Doctoral students can be taught in English (Except Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering). Applicants for programs taught in English should have either (a) a TOEFL score of 80 or above, (b) an IELTS score of 6.0 or above, (c) other equivalent certificate of English proficiency. Native English speakers are exempted.

c. At the point of graduation, for students with Chinese language as the medium of instruction, their Chinese language proficiency must reach HSK band 5. For those with English as the major teaching language, bachelor’s degree students must reach HSK band 4 in their Chinese language proficiency, while master's degree students and doctor’s degree students must reach HSK band 3.

4. Financial guarantee requirements Applicants are required to submit the Statement of Financial Support for International Students, evidence to prove that the applicant has sufficient funds to cover tuition, accommodation and living expenses. The financial supporter should attach his/her working certificate and passport copy together with the statement.

III. Categories of Students and Application Materials

1. Degree Conferring Students

1.1 Bachelor’s degree

NOTE

1. Applicants for programs in sports (art) should have the relevant education background and learning potential for the subjects they apply and need to participate in the academic assessment by the relevant college. Students who study in sports (art) can’t transfer majors during the period of studying.

2. Undergraduates who complete their degree courses within the time limit set by the university，obtain the required credits and pass the thesis defense will be awarded a bachelor's degree as appropriate.

1.2 Master’s Degree

NOTE:

1.Master's Degree candidates must pass their freshman year course examinations and academic review before entering the study for their degree courses. Students who fail to pass the examination or academic review will only graduate with a diploma of general study.

2.Master's Degree candidates who complete their degree courses within the time limit set by the university，obtain the required credits and pass the thesis defense will be awarded a Master’s degree as appropriate. Students who fail to meet the above mentioned requirements will only graduate with a certificate of general or advanced study as appropriate.

1. Degree Conferring Students

1.1 Online application

a. Applicants should first apply online at http://applyonline.jmu.edu.cn

b. Online registration is a necessary procedure for applying. Our school will not accept paper application materials.

1.2 Verification of Qualifications

a. Applicants for bachelor’s degree programs should submit their applications upon enrollment for verification of qualifications by Admission Office and Academic Affairs Office.

b. Applicants for master's and doctor’s degree programs who pass the verification of qualification by Admission Office, the application documents will then be forwarded to the relevant college for academic review.

c.Those who pass the verification of qualification and academic review will be accepted by Admissions Office.

2. Non-degree Conferring Students

a. Applicants for non-degree programs are required to submit their applications upon enrollment for verification of qualifications by Alice Lee International College.Applicants should first apply online at http://hwyypx.jmu.edu.cn/jmp/fron.

b. Online registration is a necessary procedure for applying. Our school will not accept paper application materials. Applications will not be accepted after the deadline.

V. Scholarships

In addition to meeting the application conditions of corresponding awards, scholarship applicants shall also meet the following age requirements:

a. Bachelor’s degree: no more than 30 years old (as of September 1，2025);

b. Master's degree: no more than 35 years old (as of September 1，2025);

c. Doctor’s degree: no more than 40 years old (as of September 1，2025);

1. Fujian Provincial Government Scholarship for International Student

a. Maximum Scholarships for International Student include:

Undergraduate/Language Student (30,000RMB/person/year);

Master Candidate (40,000RMB/person /year);and

Ph. D. Candidate (50,000RMB/person/year).

b. The scholarships can be used to pay for tuition, accommodation fee and etc.

c. Applicants should submit required documents directly to JMU Admission Office between Feb 20 and May 10 each year online.

d. Please download and fill in The Application Form for Fujian Provincial Government Scholarship.

2. JMU Scholarship for International Student

a. JMU Scholarships for International Student include:

Master Candidate (25,000 RMB/ person/year) and Ph.D. Candidate (30,000 RMB/person/year).

b. The scholarships can be used to pay for tuition, accommodation fee and etc.

c. Applicants should submit required documents directly to JMU Admission Office between Feb 20 and May 10 each year online.

d. Please download and fill in The Application Form for JMU International Student scholarship.

3. Scholarship Limitation

Applicants should not be awardees of Fujian Provincial Government Scholarship or JMU Scholarship for International Student at the same time. The amount and quota of scholarship are subject to the final documents from the higher authorities.

The dorm building for international student is in the main campus area with beautiful surroundings and easy access. The rooms are air-conditioned and equipped with furniture. There is a bathroom in every bedroom where hot water is available.

Ⅸ. Other

Applicants are responsible for the truthfulness and accuracy of the information and documents submitted. Failure to meet the admission regulations for international students or any falsification or misrepresentation, whenever it is confirmed, will result in disqualification of application, enrollment, graduation and degrees awarded in accordance with the regulations of the educational authorities and the University.
